What CQC Ratings Mean — and How to Check Any Care Company
Every home care provider in England is regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission. Five minutes on their website tells you more about a company than any brochure — here's how to read what you find.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. Home care agencies must be registered with it, are inspected against national standards, and are given a public rating. If a company you're considering isn't CQC-registered at all, walk away — regulated personal care without registration is illegal.
The four ratings
Outstanding — exceptional, innovative care (rare: only a small fraction of providers).
Good — performing well and meeting expectations; the standard families should look for.
Requires improvement — falling short in some areas; read the report to see where.
Inadequate — serious concerns; the CQC will be taking action.
The Five Questions Behind Every Rating
Inspectors judge every service against the same five questions — and the answers are rated individually in each report, which is where the detail lives:
Is it safe?
Medication handling, safeguarding, learning from incidents.
Is it effective?
Trained staff, good outcomes, working well with GPs and nurses.
Is it caring?
Dignity, kindness, involving people in their own care.
Is it responsive?
Care shaped around the person, complaints taken seriously.
Is it well-led?
Honest management, good culture, continuous improvement.
How to Check a Provider in Five Minutes
Search cqc.org.uk
Type the company name into the CQC website. Check the registration is current and covers "personal care".
Read the report, not just the badge
The rating is the headline; the report is the story. Look at the date too — an old rating tells you less than a recent one.
Triangulate
Pair the CQC report with independent reviews on homecare.co.uk and a conversation with the provider. Ask how they'd handle a missed visit, staff sickness, or a complaint — good companies answer plainly.
