Why Community Nursing Matters

Our Student Nurse's Perspective

At Kingsway Care, we often see firsthand the life-changing impact of care delivered at home. For one of our student nurses, this experience has shaped not only her studies, but her entire career path.

As Jodie approaches the end of her Adult Nursing degree, she reflects on how working in the community has influenced her decision to pursue a different kind of nursing role, one that keeps people where they most want to be: at home.

Jodie is a student nurse at the University of Brighton and works part-time for Kingsway Care.

I'm currently in my third year studying Adult Nursing at University of Brighton and approaching the end of my course and starting to apply for nursing roles. After working within a hospital setting for a few years, I returned to Kingsway Care in October to balance working alongside Uni and Placement commitments. I returned to Kingsway Care after previously working with them for a year prior to my degree, and I saw first hand the difference nursing care within a community setting can make in enabling people to live independently at home, avoid hospital admissions, and most importantly allow a holistic assessment of a person's needs and circumstances, with what is most important to them. I have now decided to apply for a nursing role within the community and am looking forward to continuing supporting people within their own homes.

Supporting Independence at Home

Community nursing plays a vital role in helping people maintain their independence. Rather than adapting to the routines and limitations of a hospital environment, individuals can continue living in familiar surroundings, with care tailored to their lifestyle, preferences, and personal goals.

This approach doesn’t just support physical health, it protects dignity, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.

Preventing Hospital Admissions

One of the most significant benefits of community-based care is its ability to prevent unnecessary hospitalisation. Early intervention, regular monitoring, and personalised care plans mean potential health issues can be identified and managed before they escalate.

For many people, avoiding a hospital stay reduces stress, lowers the risk of complications such as infections, and leads to better overall outcomes.

A More Holistic Approach to Care

In the community, care goes beyond clinical needs. Nurses and caregivers gain a deeper understanding of each individual’s daily life, relationships, and what truly matters to them.

This allows for a more holistic assessment, supporting not just medical needs, but social, emotional, and practical aspects of wellbeing. It’s a more human approach to care, and one that often leads to stronger, more trusting relationships.

Shaping the Future of Nursing

It’s inspiring to see future nurses choosing this path. Community nursing is not only essential to the sustainability of our healthcare system, it’s also incredibly rewarding.

By supporting people to live safely and happily at home, community nurses make a lasting difference every single day.

Kingsway Care is proud to play a part in supporting future nurses reach their career goals.
