How Did Katy Find The Powered Wheelchair?

People frequently ask how Katy found such a stylish powered wheelchair. So we asked her all about it in case you need to use a wheelchair too. Katy shared that she had been using her previous wheelchair (the black one in the photo) for 7–8 years and felt it was time for an upgrade. The seat had become worn, the battery life had deteriorated, and it no longer provided the features she needed.

Powered Wheelchair Costs & Funding

The process of getting a new wheelchair begins with a referral from a GP for an assessment by NHS Wheelchair Services. Kingsway CareGiver, Jara, accompanied Katy to her assessment, which took 1–2 hours. The NHS can contribute up to £2,000 towards a wheelchair, but Katy had her heart set on the TDX model, which costs around £5,000.

With the help of £1,500 donations via her Just Giving page, and an *NHS Voucher, Katy was able to secure the funding to cover the difference.

*Wheelchair funding through the NHS may also be available in the form of a voucher, allowing you to top-up and purchase powered wheelchairs that suit your requirements. This voucher will also cover any maintenance and repairs.

Custom Tailored Wheelchair Seat & Trims

One of her favourite features is the pummel on the seat, which was custom-tailored for her comfort. After trialling the wheelchair for a few weeks, the pummel was later moulded to make it even more comfortable and prevent rubbing between her legs.

And, let’s not forget the cherry on top: the customisable trims! Katy chose her favourite colour, purple, adding a personal touch to her sleek new ride. With its stylish design and durable performance, the TDX gives her full functionality without sacrificing style.

How to Obtain a Wheelchair from NHS Sussex

If you or a loved one needs a wheelchair and are registered with a GP in West Sussex or Brighton & Hove, NHS Sussex offers a comprehensive wheelchair service. Here's how it works:

What the Service Provides:

Manual Wheelchairs: Transit or self-propelling models for basic mobility needs.
Powered Wheelchairs: Indoor use and some outdoor use if assessed as safe.
Specialist Seating: For those who require custom contoured seating.
Buggies: For children with mobility needs over 30 months old.

What to Expect:

Holistic Assessment: The team will evaluate your mobility needs, taking into account your health, environment, and lifestyle.
Ongoing Support: You’ll receive training on how to use and maintain the equipment, along with access to repairs and maintenance through AJM Mobility.

How to Access the Service:

Eligibility: You must have a long-term mobility need (6 months or more).
Referral: Ask your GP or healthcare professional to refer you to the service.

Once you're assessed, the team, which includes occupational therapists and rehabilitation engineers, will guide you through selecting the right wheelchair and provide ongoing care to ensure your independence and quality of life are maximised.

Buying or Renting a Powered Wheelchair

If you don't qualify for a Powered Wheelchair via the NHS then you could look at buying or renting a wheelchair. The Karma Mobility website has some very useful information. You may also be able to lease a power chair and wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) through the Motability Scheme.
