Five Festive Tips: Coping with Dementia

For many, Christmas is a time for socialising, food, and connection—but for those living with dementia, the festive season can also bring challenges. Social gatherings, changes in routine, and sensory overload can create anxiety, making it important to tailor celebrations to their needs.

Here are five festive tips to ensure a merry Christmas for everyone, including your loved one with dementia.

1. Patience & Understanding Are Key

Your loved one is doing their best to communicate, even if it means repeating the same questions or struggling to find the right words. Stay calm, patient, and supportive. Try kneeling to speak at eye level which can make communication feel easier and more personal.

2. Familiar Routines & Reminiscing

Familiar routines and memories can provide comfort during the holiday season:

  • Play Christmas Classics: Put on festive songs they’ve loved for years. Music has a unique way of unlocking emotions and memories, even when other forms of communication are challenging.
  • Reminisce Over Christmas Past: Bring out old photo albums and share stories of earlier celebrations. Many people with dementia retain vivid memories from their youth, which can be a source of joy and connection.

3. Minimise Anxiety in New Environments

Visiting friends or family can be confusing, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. Help them navigate the day by:

  • Gently guiding them to the bathroom at regular intervals, as they might not realise they need to go.
  • Keep an eye out for subtle signs of discomfort or restlessness so you can address their needs quickly.

4. Simplify Festive Meals

Large portions or fancy dishes can feel overwhelming. Offer smaller servings to make meals more approachable—they can always have seconds! Keeping food simple and familiar will help your loved one feel more at ease during the meal.

5. Balance Socialising with Quiet Moments

Some people with dementia enjoy being part of the festivities while others may tire quickly. Allow them to take breaks in a quiet, comfortable space if the day becomes too much.
