Managing Parkinson’s Symptoms

Managing Parkinson’s Symptoms: Client Case Study

Learn how we supported a Kingsway Care Client to manage Parkinson's symptoms and live independently in Brighton & Hove.

Supporting Independence at Home

One of our clients was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at 60 years old. For many years, he managed well with minimal symptoms. However, in 2023, his condition began to change. He needed support with personal care, medication management, and daily tasks at home.

As his mobility, freezing episodes, and confidence declined, his social interactions reduced because he could no longer leave his home easily.

A fiercely independent person, he was determined not to lose control over his life. Our Client Coordinator made sure the care team understood this.

The Importance of Medication Management

Kingsway CareGivers are bighearted, reliable and professional in Brighton & Hove

Parkinson's medication is highly time-sensitive, and any delay or missed dose can worsen symptoms.

We quickly discovered that some of his worsening Parkinson's symptoms were caused by inconsistent medication timing. Parkinson’s medication is highly time-sensitive, and any delay or missed dose can worsen symptoms.

After intensive discussions, we reassured him that allowing us to manage his medication temporarily would not take away his independence. The care team:

  • Ensured medication was taken on time, every time
  • Kept track of any missed doses or changes in symptoms
  • Liaised with his clinical team to adjust treatment when necessary

Over five months, we perfected a medication routine that worked for him. He even designed his system to ensure no doses were missed.

Regaining Confidence and Independence

With consistent support, his symptoms improved. Our CareGivers encouraged him to:

  • Go on outings to regain confidence outside
  • Keep up with his exercise routine
  • Grow vegetables in his garden, a hobby he had always enjoyed

As a result, he felt so much better that he no longer needed our professional home care. He remained independent for nine months, managing his medication and Parkinson's symptoms perfectly.

Ongoing Support as Needs Change

Recently, his symptoms began progressing again, not due to missed medication but because of the natural advancement of Parkinson’s Disease. We resumed home care support with:

  • Morning and evening visits to assist with daily routines
  • Monitoring his condition, including freezing episodes
  • Liaising with the Community Parkinson’s Nursing team, allowing us to bring forward his medical review

Our Client remains in control of his life at home, and we continue to adapt care to meet his changing needs.
