Celebrating 80th Anniversary of VE Day
At Kingsway Care, we believe care is about more than just home visits. It's about being part of the community and supporting our elderly and disabled community. That’s why, for the past four years, we’ve proudly supported a wonderful local charity in Hove — the Food and Friendship Luncheon Club.
Combating Loneliness with Food and Friendship
The club is a lifeline for older and disabled people in Brighton & Hove. Every Tuesday and Thursday, they offer warm meals and even warmer company. It’s a place where people come together to meet, eat, chat, and feel part of something special.
Kingsway Care’s Yellow Angels Join the Party

Kingsway CareGivers, Lisa, Bruce, Sally and Stephanie roll up their sleeves to help out at the Food and Friendship 80th Anniversary VE Day Indoor Street Party in Hove.
Usually, we pay one or two of our CareGivers – our much-loved ‘yellow angels’ – to volunteer at the club. They help the regular volunteers with food preparations, serving the food to 80+ people and cleaning up afterwards. This may not sound like fun but check out the photos to see the volunteers and guests smiles that make it all worthwhile.
To help celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Caroline, the founder of the club, asked if we could send more hands on deck. We didn’t hesitate. We sent four of our fabulous CareGivers – Lisa, Sally, Bruce, and Stephanie – to join the indoor street party!
A VE Day Celebration to Remember
And what a celebration it was.
The indoor street party was full of joy and memories. There was party food, decorations, wartime music, and lots of stories shared by guests and volunteers – some of whom remembered VE Day from 80 years ago.

Michael brought in his national service kit bag and newspapers from that historic day. Rose brought a photo album filled with pictures of her father and his service book. Linda brought along a ration book, and Karen had a photo of a street party that her grandmother and mum had attended.

Music And Memories
TJ gave a stunning performance of wartime favourites like White Cliffs of Dover and Chattanooga Choo Choo. Her voice transported guests back in time and got some showing off their moves on the dance floor.

Community Spirit at its Best
A big thank you to Food and Friendship and all the volunteers who made sandwiches (yes, even the spam and fish paste ones!), blew up balloons, decorated the hall, served teas and coffees, and stayed behind to tidy up.

Volunteering is Good For You & The Community
At Kingsway Care, we’re so proud to support this amazing charity financially and also pay our CareGivers for their time volunteering. If you have spare time, we can thoroughly recommend volunteering at the Food and Friendship Lunch Club which does such important work to combat loneliness for our elderly and disabled community.

Volunteering is not only good for the community — it’s good for you too! Taking time to help others can lift your spirits, give you purpose, and connect you with new friends. Whether you’re making sandwiches or sharing a smile, your kindness can brighten someone’s day.
