What's A Double-Up Visit?

When Two CareGivers Are Better Than One

Understanding Double-Up Visits at Kingsway Care.

At Kingsway Care, every care plan is designed around one simple goal, keeping our clients safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible.

Sometimes, that means introducing what’s known as a “double-up visit”, when two CareGivers work together during a care call. This happens whenever additional support is needed to make sure both the client and the CareGiver are safe, particularly when using specialist equipment like a hoist.

Why do we use hoists?

A hoist helps to lift and transfer someone who finds it difficult or unsafe to move independently. This might be due to illness, injury, frailty, or a long-term condition that affects mobility.

Hoisting is a skilled process, one CareGiver operates the equipment while the other offers physical and emotional support, guiding the client, stabilising the hoist, and checking for any signs of discomfort or distress. Working as a team ensures the transfer is smooth, safe, and dignified, while also protecting the CareGivers from injury.

Tailored support for every situation

Each client’s needs are unique. For example, one of our clients who has a terminal condition recently began to experience reduced mobility in the mornings. Because pain medication can affect his movement and alertness, we’ve introduced two CareGivers to assist with hoisting during morning visits, while lighter equipment is used later in the day when the client feels stronger.

This flexible approach keeps the client safe while promoting as much independence as possible, something we always aim for at Kingsway Care.

Encouraging Independence and Recovery

Double-up visits aren’t always permanent. Some clients only need extra support for a short time. For instance, during recovery from an illness, a period of reduced mobility, or a medication adjustment.

As a client’s strength and confidence improve, we regularly review their care plan and may reduce the number of CareGivers. Sometimes, they no longer need home care visits at all. Seeing someone regain independence is always a wonderful moment for our team.
